Drug and Alcohol Assessment

Treatment starts with understanding. A one-on-one assessment gives you a clear picture of what is going on and which level of care fits.

Why treatment starts with an assessment

Effective treatment begins with a clear understanding of your needs. At Helping Hearts Recovery, the assessment is the foundation of your care. It gives you and your clinician a full picture of your substance use history, your mental health, and the challenges you are facing right now.

Through a compassionate one-on-one conversation and evidence-based assessment tools, our team gathers what is needed to accurately identify substance use disorders and any co-occurring mental health conditions.

More than a checklist

An assessment goes beyond naming problems. We take time to understand the whole person: your goals, your strengths, and the people who support you. Whether you are struggling with alcohol or drugs, anxiety, depression, or trauma, the assessment shapes a treatment plan built for your situation. Recovery starts with being seen and heard.

What to expect

Comprehensive screening

We look for substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, and any underlying issues affecting your well-being.

A compassionate approach

You talk with an experienced counselor in a safe, supportive space where you can be honest without fear of stigma.

A personalized plan

Based on your results, we build a treatment plan around your needs, goals, and strengths. That plan may point to our Intensive Outpatient Program or another level of care.

Ongoing re-evaluation

Your needs change as you heal. We check in on your progress regularly and adjust your plan so it keeps fitting.

If someone asked you to get an assessment

If a court, probation officer, employer, or family member has asked you to get a drug and alcohol assessment, give us a call. We will explain how our assessment works so you can decide on your next step with the facts in hand.

Common questions

What happens during a drug and alcohol assessment?

You meet one-on-one with a clinician to complete an intake and a comprehensive drug and alcohol assessment. Together you talk through your substance use history, mental health, goals, strengths, and support system. The clinician then uses the ASAM criteria to recommend a level of care and set clear treatment goals with you.

What are the ASAM criteria?

The ASAM Criteria are guidelines from the American Society of Addiction Medicine that clinicians use to match a person with the right intensity of care. They look at the whole person, not only substance use, so the recommendation fits your actual situation.

Does the assessment look at anxiety, depression, or trauma too?

Yes. Substance use and mental health often affect each other, so the assessment screens for co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, and trauma as part of understanding the whole person.

Does insurance cover an assessment?

We currently accept Medicare, Medicaid (Fee for Service), Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and AARP. Coverage depends on your plan, so call us and we will help you understand your options.
